With the Skate Canada Canadian Tire National Figure Skating Championships going on right now, most figure skating fans across our country have their eye on New Brunswick, watching Canada's best. Many skating fans in Lethbridge however, are also excited for the 2019 Geico U.S. National Figure Skating Championships in Detroit taking place right now.
That's because a 15 year old skater from the Lethbridge Skating Club will be competing. This time last year, Romy Malcolm was in search of a dance partner so she could follow her dream of becoming an ice dancer. She traveled to Colorado to audition with a dancer there, and within a few short months, had relocated to train at the Monument Skating Club with her new partner, Davis Ortonward.
In the months since, Romy and Davis have been training hard with 20 hours on the ice each week and additional off -ice training and ballroom dancing. In November Romy and Davis competed at the 2019 Pacific Coast Sectional FS Championships in Salt Lake City, where they placed third and earned a spot in the US National Championships.
Davis and Romy are supported by a team of great coaches, including Tiffany Dombeck, Lara Ladret, Ben Agosto, Quinn Chambers, and Chris Dean.
In December the Lethbridge Skating Club had the opportunity to cheer Romy and Davis on in person, when they were guest skaters at the annual Toys for Tots charity skating event.
The pair is competing at the Intermediate level, and will perform their pattern dance at 1:00 PM (MST) on Saturday January 19th, and their Free Dance at 12:45 (MST) on Sunday January 20th. The event will be live streamed and can be watched here: https://usfigureskatingfanzone.com/watch/?Live=92&type=Live
Lethbridge Skating Club coach Darren Gillett says, "We are very proud of not just what Romy has accomplished as a skater, but also having the drive and determination to pursue her dream," The Lethbridge Skating Club is very proud of Romy and all her hard work, and we will all be cheering for her and Davis when they take to the ice in Detroit!
