TEST DAYS
Picture

Next Test Day - TBD
Location - TBD
Submission Date - TBD
Pull Date - TBD

Private Lesson STARSkate skaters are assessed through the nationally standardized testing system for achieving specific figure skating skills that fall into the four disciplines as recognized by Skate Canada - Free Skate, Dance, Skating Skills and Interpretive.
  • STAR 1-5 assessments for Free Skate and Dance are assessed by the skater's coach, as well as STAR 1-Gold Skating Skills. These assessments most often take place on a regular skating lesson session and results are reported to Skate Canada for record keeping. Payment for the '(Coach Assessed) STAR Assessment fee' may be made HERE.
  • High test days (STAR 6 thru GOLD Free Skate, Dance, and Interpretive assessments, as well as the Diamond Dances) are a formal process where skaters can demonstrate the skills they have learned and hopefully meet the criteria set out by Skate Canada. Qualified Skate Canada Evaluators (whom are volunteers) complete assessment of these tests.
  • High test days are scheduled months in advance to allow adequate planning and preparation and the test day is often offered to skaters of surrounding local clubs. The Lethbridge Skating Club is part of the South Region of Skate Canada: Alberta-NWT/Nunavut Section. All of our High Test days must be applied for through the Region High Test Coordinator and are approved by the Section Test Administrator, who then approves the selection of a qualified Skate Canada Evaluator.
  • It is important that the coach, skater and parents maintain communication on the skater’s progress to help the skater achieve their goals and make decisions regarding what to assess and when to do so. In addition to the Skate Canada assessment fee of $12 per assessment, parents are responsible for a share of further fees to cover the cost of the test day (ie. evaluator expenses/hospitality, dance partnering fees).

Test Days come with specific etiquette to be followed. Skaters are required to arrive one hour prior to their scheduled assessment time to allow time to properly warm-up and mentally prepare. Skaters are to dress in appropriate attire. Spectators are welcome but are expected to behave with decorum, respecting the evaluators and skaters need to focus. Each skater is provided with a warm-up of approximately 5 minutes. The skater then performs for the evaluator, who will observe, make comments and indicate whether the skater passed or must retry the assessment at a future test day. The evaluator’s feedback should be discussed with the skater’s coach.

Assessments not submitted by midnight (local time) on the submission date will only be accepted if time permits. Any request to add assessments within fourteen days of the test day requires the permission of the Section Test Administrator. If the request is approved, then permission must also be obtained from the approved evaluator.

If a skater has to withdraw for any reason other than illness or injury within 14 days of the assessment date, the assessment fee must be paid and the skaters are still responsible for their portion of the test day expense.

If a skater wishes to complete an assessment at a club other than his/her ‘home club’ he/she must present written consent from the Test Chair of their home club prior to taking the assessment. When sending skaters to another club for assessment, the Test Chair shall prepare a letter and send this permission with the assessment sheets or email them to the host Test Chair in advance of the test day.

OUTSTANDING CLUB AND ASSESSMENT FEES MUST BE PAID PRIOR TO ANY TEST DAY OR A SKATER'S ASSESSMENT WILL NOT BE COMPLETED

BECOMING AN OFFICIAL

Officials play a very important part in our sport. As volunteers, they donate their time, knowledge and expertise to assist in the development of our athletes and are valued members of the Association. There are several different types of officials: evaluators/judges, technical specialists, referees and data specialists. Judges are perhaps the best known officials and they are usually former skaters who have had a positive experience in the sport and wish to help others attain their goals. For more information about becoming a Skate Canada Official click HERE or see the Skate Canada recruitment brochure.
